The name Stegosaurus means roofed or plated reptiles.[2] The Stegosaurs walked on four legs (quadrupedal) and were plant eaters (herbivores). They are characterized by having two longitudinal rows of plates and spines on the back to tail for defense.

The fossils of the family Stegosauridae were discovered in Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah, Wyoming, Tanzania, East Africa and Central China.[2]

Early depictions of Stegosaurus showed eight plates in the tail instead of the four used in modern representations.[3]
