Nathan (son of David)

Nathan was a son of King David and his wife Bathsheba and, therefore, brother to King Solomon 1Chronicles 3:5 (KJV).

Ancestry of the Messiah

One point of interest is Nathan's role of ancestor to the Messiah. The lineage of Mary descends from Nathan making him an actual blood ancestor Luke 3:31 (KJV). This is unlike the ancestry of Joseph which comes from Solomon since Joseph was only an adoptive parent. There is a possible prophecy regarding this situation given to King David.

And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name. 1King 5:5 (KJV)

. Within this passage the words "I will set" comes from the root word of 'Natan'. This is the same root word from which Nathan receives his name. Natan is also translated as 'to give' [1]. The suggested prophecy uses this word in a double meaning. First, David's son will be given the throne. Second, David's son Nathan will be set upon the throne which came to pass when Nathan's line led to the Messiah.
