Carbon fiber reinforced polymer
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer is very strong, light-weight, and high-cost material made up of carbon fibers with polymeric matrix to provide load transfer. CFRP wraps carbon fiber with fabric to stretch the surface and to increase the strength. CFRP are light weight, allow faster travel, supports heavy loads. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer is integrated in many applications, manufactures, and many transportation.
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer is composed of two parts: the matrix and reinforcement. The materials of carbon fiber reinforced polymer series differ in strength and stability. The low density, slightly moist structure, and high resistance combined with fixable heat produce these characteristics. However, CFRP has better strength than glass fiber reinforced plastics because CFRP’s materials and properties are more applicable to applications than glass fiber reinforced plastics
Carbon fiber reinforced polymers have these characteristics:
-High strength to weight ratio
-High corrosion resistance
-Low thermal expansion
-Low impact resistance
Carbon fiber reinforced polymers are used in many applications, automotive, sports, aerospace engineering, building, manufactures, constructions, and many other tools. Boeing and Lexus are first companies that have developed their production to be able to use carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Many automobile part companies use CFRP to produce the carbon fiber automobiles parts in market. Boeing had use carbon fiber reinforced polymer in these recently productions since 747-400, 777-200, 777-300, 777-300ER, 737-900, 737-900ER, 747-8, 787-8, and 787-9. They are using CFRP to lower the weight and increase the strength. Especially, the new 737-600,-700,-800,-900, new generation -900ER, 787 series, and 747-8 use carbon brakes for production line. The carbon brakes have many benefits versus steel brakes: longer life, cost effectiveness, high performance, and lightweightness. The new carbon brakes have almost twice landing life more than steel brakes. Today, the carbon brakes’ costs are similar to steel brakes but they have better performance and lighter weight. Since all 737 aircrafts use carbon brakes, they save more weight than the previous 737 generation: 737-600,-700 save 550 lbs; 737-600 to -900ER save about 700 lbs . The carbon brakes also decrease the fuel usage and extend the range of the flight.
Lexus, a high-end car brand under Toyota, produced the first carbon fiber car called “LFA” in 2009. Lexus started developing LFA since 2000 by designed LFA as a V6 aerodynamic car. In 2009, Lexus announced the final LFA with V10 engine and 65 percent carbon fiber reinforced polymer body kit with market price $375,000 .
Carbon fiber reinforced polymers have majority involving in bicycle technology. Today, bicycle brands use CFRP to mainly lower the weight and increase speed, and improve the strength to keep the production strong. CFRP is also involved in frames, forks, handlebars, wheels, gear systems, and pedals .
