Binomial Name

Allenopithecus nigroviridis

Allen's swamp monkey scientific name is Allenopithecus nigroviridis. They live in the forest in a swamp, in the Congo Basin of Africa. They usually play during the day (they are diurnal animals). They eat fruits, leaves, also beetles and worms. They look for prey on the ground or in the shallow lake. [1] About 40 of them including several adult males live together as a group. Their habits are not well known. When they laugh, they show their teeth like other kinds of monkeys. Also they express themselves by making a wry face, obeying, or sense of superiority. They live to about 20 years. [2]

Allen's Swamp Monkey, living in the swamp in the Congo Basin, has greenish gray body, but the fur color of its abdomen is more brighter. The fur of its crown on the head is flat. Its face has bundles of long and reddish hair at the cheek. The length of its body is about 1.35-1.67in(41-51cm). And the length of its tail is about 1.18-1.74in(36-53cm). Sometimes you can find swelling periodically from females.[3]

Usually males are larger than females, the weight of male is about 6kg (13.23lb) and the weight of female is about 3.5kg(7.72lb). [4]

There is nothing really well known about reproduction of Allen's monkey. But what is known is the young are weaned in approximately three months and are mature after three to five years. Most births occur in June.

The Allen’s Swamp Monkey is a diurnal animal (active during the day) with a largely frugivorous diet (fruit eating) looking for fruits on bushes and trees. They also consume vertebrates, pith, roots, and invertebrates. Smaller specimens are observed eating nectar of the species Daniellia pynaertii, but nectar will not support the energy requirement of larger variety.

About 40 of them are living as a group, but it will split up into groups of 2 to 6 for looking for foods. They usually sleep near the water, and the same spots are used repeatedly. It will dive into water when it sees an enemy. [5]
